Chemistry Major presents Poster on Capitol Hill

On May 5, Olumuyiwa Fagbami, a junior chemistry major at Delaware State University was selected in a nationwide competition to present a research poster on Capitol Hill in Washington D.C.  The title of Olumuyiwa’s poster was “Thermodynamics and Kinetics of Magnesium Hydride for Hydrogen Storage.”  The competition was sponsored by the Council on Undergraduate Research and the American Chemical Society.  Over 400 applicants from across the country participated in the competition and only 60 students were selected to appear on Capitol Hill.  Delaware State University was the only HBCU selected to be in this elite group.  While in Washington D.C., Olumuyiwa and his advisor, Dr. Andrew Goudy, met with Senators Tom Carper and Michael Kaufman as well as Congressman Mike Castle.  In another competition held at the UMBC earlier this year, Olumuyiwa won a second place award for his research project.  He is just one example of the fine research being conducted in the science departments at Delaware State University.

DSU CHEMISTRY GRADUATE STUDENT RECEIVES RESEARCH GRANT

Samuel Orefuwa, a graduate student in the Applied Chemistry PhD program, was awarded $5,000 from of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund for his research on “Synthesis and Characterization of Metal Organic Frameworks for Hydrogen Storage and their Spillover Properties”.  This award was the result of a national competition and the funds will be used for research supplies and for travel to scientific meetings.  Mr. Orefuwa is conducting his research under the advisement of Dr. Andrew Goudy, Professor and Chair of the Chemistry Department.
